Let’s say you want to launch your own brand of protein powder for bodybuilders. You probably already know who your competitors are, and you have done a lot of research on the product and probably use it every day. The leading brands in the industry are really just marketing campaigns bolstered around a cheap product full of chemicals that costs nothing to make and doesn’t actually help people grow muscle.

The same goes for shampoo, cosmetics, groceries, services, and anything you can name across any industry.

Whatever your competitors are doing, do the opposite.

Let’s say you make a good product that actually does what it’s supposed to do and not just a marketing campaign bolstered around a cheap mainstream product, then you’ve effectively created a niche in the industry. A niche is how you get started, don’t go gunning for the big dogs straight away. And like most niches, be prepared to sacrifice some profit for your brand, at least in the short term.

Educate

It’s really important that you educate your customers about what makes your product different. Use social media in the form of blogs and YouTube videos. Call out your competitors for substandard quality such as alcohol and sodium in soaps and shampoos, or maltodextrin in protein shakes… Be a service company who actually is available 24/7/365 and make sure customers know the difference between being dead in the water over the weekend versus being able to contact you right away.
